We’ll begin by telling what open mic isn’t. It absolutely isn’t karaoke. Singers aren’t just singing to pre-recorded tracks. “Open Mic” is something different. In this environment, singers perform with actual musicians. This is a beautiful thing because when you’re working with real live musicians, they can follow you. If you decide to slow down a phrase, they will slow down too. If you decide to change the tempo completely, they’ll go with you. Since you’re working with real musicians, you also aren’t forced into singing your songs in certain keys. Real musicians can “play it in any key” and Bob and Robert are absolutely fantastic musicians. All you have to do is show up and sing! Simple no?
Here’s how things work with us:
1. Come to the piano and check in. This is likely only necessary if you’re new, you’ve only come a few times, or we haven’t seen you in a while. Just come on in and approach Anthony. He’ll be the first man you see at the end of the piano. Simply tell him your full name and relax! We’ll call you up just as soon as we can. If he hasn’t arrived yet, you’ll find a sign-up sheet on top of the piano. Simply add your name to it. When he arrives, he’ll assemble the main list based on the sign-up sheet.
2. Have a song in mind. Of course, you’ll want to have a song in mind with words you either know or can quickly access (our website can help in that regard as you’ve likely already seen.) It would also be helpful (though not totally necessary) to know the key you sing your chosen song in. If you don’t know it, it’s perfectly okay! Bob and Robert will ask you to sing a line and they can figure it out with little trouble. If you have sheet music, please bring it up with you. Don’t worry that they may not have seen it before. Both Bob and Robert are excellent sight readers so new sheet music is not an issue for either of them.
3. Have fun! That’s the whole point anyway, isn’t it? All of our patrons are among the nicest people we know and they all want you to do well. You’re absolutely guaranteed support from all of us. We want you to relax and enjoy yourself and we’ll make it as easy as possible.
Also worth noting is that once you’re added to the list, you remain on it unless you tell us otherwise. Translation: we want you to sing a lot! If you don’t feel like singing anymore, just let Anthony know and he’ll remove you from the list. We’d rather hear you…but we’ll understand.
If you have any further questions about what’s going on, feel free to approach Anthony and he’ll answer any questions you have!
